Doug's Opener

Hello Patrollers,
Earlier this year, Audie, Noel & I talked about Todds offer to use his blogging knowledge to set up this tool and allow we members of the Boyne Mountain National Ski Patrol to discuss concerns, problems and possible solutions for our patrol.
Audie, Noel and I are planning a meeting with Ed Grice and Dave Newman this summer to present possible improvements to the way that our patrol functions. We need your constructive input so we can present to them the most comprehensive list of things that need attention.
The following is a partial list of concerns that I have heard recently:
Re-build our most valuable asset, camaraderie.
Retention & Recruitment of Boyne Mountain NSP members.
Less night patrolling assignments per patroller.
More reliable snowmobiles.
More consistent discount privileges at Boyne Mountain.
More patroller training & refreshment of BMNSP policys & procedures.
Improve the appearance of the patrol room.
Possible new location site of the patrol room.
Refurbishment of patrol equipment & toboggans.
More consistent attendance or substitutes by patrollers.
Increase dollar value of meal voucher.
Possible fundraising efforts.
Lockers for patrollers at patrol room (future patrol room).
I am sure that there are some items that I have missed, but this is where all of you and this blog come-in. Please post your concerns and possible solutions. I have ideas on some of the items listed above and will post them in the future.
Thanks in advance for your participation.
Doug

Nice start Doug....I think that this forum will be a good way to get a handle on the thoughts of the members of our patrol so that you can more accurately represent them at your meetings with management. In order for it to be successful though, EVERYONE must participate..so come on guys...now is your chance to be heard!! (and in a more productive way than just blowing smoke on the chairlift!)

I think this blog is an excellent idea. Thanks to all who put this in place--you may need to send a few reminder e-mails to the group until it 'catches on'....My issue is camaraderie. I view the ski patrol similar to the local fire department I volunteer on-we are a fraternity-an extended family--we all come from different backgrounds, educations, incomes, etc...but we all come together on the weekends to ski, serve our fellow skiers and enjoy each others company--I have no real issues with the current patrol other than the damn snow mobiles :) I've come to like the patrol room-I wish there was room for our families to hang out--that would solidify (sp?) our camaraderie issue and interaction between patroller families...I often feel a disconnect with other patroller families and kids simply because I don't see them around as much due to the patrol room and the lockers...I think we need to be careful with how we approach management--but on the other hand we should not underplay our history, service and contributions to Boyne Mountains success and reputation over the years. There goes Dan trying to be Jimmie Page again!...The big issues, in my opinion, ranked in order of importance, are: 1. The location of the patrol room. The public does not know where we are. I serve more skiiers in the civic center than in the patrol room. Management may see great benefit in us providing medical assistance in a centrally located patrol room rather than in the cafeteria where other guests are eating lunch. Most importantly, we are more effective treating patients in a patrol room rather than the cafeteria/civic center. Our old location was perfect. The widened parking lot and reconstruction of the loading dock area has given more room behind the old patrol room. Maybe with the addition of a fence, tall shrubery, or whatever to shield a waiting ambulance parked directly behind the old patrol room, we could make it work better in this location than before. Also, if ambulances would pull into this area without their lights and sirens, it may be a little easier for the skiing public to stomach as well. 2. Attendance 3. Snowmobile reliability 4. Recruitment

Boyne Mt. bought the former Garrett's restaurant and it is being moved the the bottom of the magic carpet. It is a very large building and they will be moving the ski school and day care in there. This will free up some space in the Civic Center or perhaps there would be room for us in the new (moved) building
